THE READ: Dealing with Mean Girls? This One’s for You 😢 🗯 👧

Okay, so anyone who was a teenager or young adult in the early 2000s loves a good Mean Girls reference. “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” is now pretty much universally understood. And while the parody flick is hilarious (though perhaps a little too true), it’s not funny when your kids are up against a mean girl. Bullies of all kinds are a nasty part of the school experience, but girls can be especially cruel to each other. If your child is dealing with a mean girl, here some strategies to help them manage:

🟡 Call out the behaviour. Instruct your child to be specific and express their point of view. “You insulting my outfit was mean, and it really hurt my feelings” has more impact than “That was mean.”

🟡 Avoid passive language. Teach your child to be assertive and express, in no uncertain terms, that they want to be left alone.

🟡 Encourage taking a breather. Sometimes the best way to deal with a mean girl is to stay away from her. This can be a challenge for kids if the bully is a close friend, but distance can help the conflict and targeting to die down.
