THE QUESTION BOX

How Can I Make the Flu Shot Less Painful?

Flu shots don’t have to be a dreaded experience. A little preparation goes a long way in easing the pinch—for kids and parents. Start by explaining in simple terms why the shot is important and how it helps to keep everyone healthy. Then, apply a topical numbing cream about an hour before the vaccine appointment to cut the pain, and plan a distraction—like a silly “Would You Rather” game or letting your child blow bubbles to practise deep breathing. Stay calm yourself (kids pick up on nerves!) and praise them afterward for being brave (a little treat wouldn’t be too out of line either).
