THE POLL

Did Your Pregnancy and Birth Announcements Change with Each Baby?

It’s funny because it’s true, right? Your first baby goes through all of the “firsts” with you, from the moment the moment the second line appears. Telling your friends and family the big news, the bump progression pics, the birth announcement—it’s a nine-month whirlwind. The second time, though, you’re caring for another human, and things get busy. It’s still exciting, but there’s less time for documenting everything. And any babies after that? If you’re still taking, “My baby is as big as a blueberry” pics by then, we salute you. Tell us in the poll below: Did you document your pregnancies and births differently with each child?

THE QUESTION BOX

Is It Bad to Be a “Helicopter Parent”?

The general definition of a “helicopter parent,” as coined by Dr. Haim Ginott in 1969, is one that must be involved in every aspect of their child’s life. They’re often extremely overprotective and struggle to let kids grow on their own. They monitor everything closely, from their child’s relationships to their activities. They are generally very anxious about their children overall.

So, yeah, helicopter parenting can be a big problem. Sure, it originates from a place of love and good intentions, but kids who are parented this way can end up feeling stunted, smothered and resentful as a result.

If you’re worried that you’re veering into helicopter territory, reach out for help. Look for parent support resources in your community, which may include family and individual therapy, support groups and more. There are ways to pull back on this style of parenting to give your kids room to breathe and make mistakes and learn for themselves.
