THE POLL

Do You Have the So-Called “Village”?

We’ve all heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” And that’s inherently true. Every friend or family member who pitches in, every teacher, every coach…they’re all in your village. But not everyone is lucky enough to have this kind of support system, and we’re interested to know how common it is for parents to go it alone. So, with this in mind, tell us: Do you have a “village” of support for raising your kids?

THE QUESTION BOX

How Can I Save on Back-to-School Shopping?

There are so many things to love about September. The crisp, fall air. The return to routine. Excited littles coming home with stories from their new classrooms. You know what isn’t so fun about September? How much it costs. From registering for after-school activities again to getting all of the required school supplies, the expenses add up.

Read on for a few tips on how to get everything the kids need on a budget.

  • Classroom supply lists will come home this week. Don’t just take it to the store to start shopping. Inventory what you already have and make a list of necessities.

  • Check out online used platforms, like Facebook Marketplace, for deals (this can be especially helpful for big-ticket items). Just be careful that you vet sellers well before transferring any money.

  • Ask your parent friends if they have any hand-me-downs to share or trade. If you have friends with kids both a little older and younger than yours, this can work well season after season!

  • Wait a few weeks for the nice-to-haves. They’ll start to go on sale.
