THE POLL

Does Your Child Have Your Personality?

Our editor Katie was a chatty kid. So much so that people still tell her, decades later, “Man, you talked so much when you were little.” So perhaps it’s no surprise that she has two chatterboxes of her own. (“Payback,” her mother says.) This seems to be a common story for other parents, too. Tell us: Does this ring true for you? Do you have your own mini-me(s)?

THE QUESTION BOX

My Kid Hates Sunscreen—How Can I Encourage Them to Use It Anyway?

Sunscreen seems like it should be an easy thing for kids to accept, and yet, it’s battle for some parents year after year. Some children don’t like the feeling of it, others just don’t want to stop what they’re doing to apply or reapply, and some just don’t see the point. But there’s definitely a point. An important one. We spoke to board-certified dermatology Dr. Julia Carroll to learn more about just how crucial it is to have kids stay on top of their sunscreen application, and how to get the kiddos on board.

To encourage kids to apply sunscreen themselves, make it a fun and routine activity. Use colourful, kid-friendly products and teach them the importance of skin protection. Remind them to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Involving them in choosing their own sunscreen can also make them more interested in using it, too. Most importantly, parents need to model sun safe behaviour themselves.”

This means, parents, that you need to bust out the SPF, too. Role modelling is a great way to show your kids that you’re dedicated to staying safe in the sun as well.
