THE POLL
Are You a Natural Consequences Parent?
Some kids need to learn things the hard way—and for those kids, natural consequences parenting (a.k.a, FAFO: F*ck Around and Find Out parenting) can be the most effective approach. The idea is that, instead of constantly intervening and never allowing your kids a moment of discomfort, you let children make their own choices... and deal with the outcomes. But how far is too far when it comes to letting kids figure it out? Click through to read our article about FAFO parenting to learn more, and in the meantime, tell us…

THE QUESTION BOX
What is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia?
May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), a time to reflect on the discrimination still faced by 2SLGBTQ+ communities. This year’s theme, “The Power of Community,” highlights how connection and belonging can be life-changing—especially for youth.
Dr. Alex Abramovich, a scientist at the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and a Canada Research Chair in 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Homelessness and Mental Health, and the team in his lab reflect on how families can be there for 2SLGBTQ+ youth on May 17 (and beyond!) at the button below. Here are just some of the ways you can show up for the marginalized kids in your life:
Learn to recognize subtle discrimination: Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia aren't always obvious. They often show up as flippant remarks, intrusive questions masked as “curiosity,” or dismissive comments disguised as debate. Don’t ignore them—call them out to show your youth they’re not alone.
Speak up when they can’t: Many 2SLGBTQ+ youth don’t feel safe pushing back. By stepping in and addressing harmful behaviour, you send a powerful message of support and protection.
Make your home visibly inclusive: Acknowledge days like IDAHOBIT and know when local Pride events are happening. Being aware of community resources and helping your youth connect with them reinforces a sense of belonging.
Support them through the coming out process: Your reaction matters. You can’t control how your youth identifies, but your response can shape their confidence and your long-term relationship. Create a space where they feel safe, heard and accepted.
