THE POLL

Do You Have Other Parent Friends Who Feel Like Your Lifeline?

There’s nothing quite like the friendships you develop with other parents. They know what it’s like to be so tired you can’t see straight. They treat your kids like their own. They will commiserate over everything from breastfeeding and potty-training to schoolyard bullies and sassy tweens. Sometimes they’re friends you’ve had your whole life; other times, you meet them at the exact time you need them. So tell us: Have you met another parent who just gets you?

We think it’s important to note that friends without kids can show up for you in all of the important ways, too. Many people love kids but just don’t want to have their own and that’s a-okay.

THE QUESTION BOX

I’ve Been Given the Option to Take My Kids to a Wedding—Should I Do It?

Oh, this is a tough one. On one hand, it’s really nice of the couple to invite your children, saving you the hassle of finding a babysitter (and for a whole day, in some cases!). On the other hand, you may spend the entire event stressing out about how your kids are behaving, meaning you probably won’t even enjoy yourself.

As far as we’re concerned, it all comes down to relationships and logistics. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you RSVP:

  1. Are my kids close with the people getting married? If yes, they’ve been invited because their presence is wanted, and the couple knows what they’re getting into.

  2. Is the wedding timeline conducive to kids? If the ceremony is at nap time, and dinner isn’t being served until 8pm, you might have your answer.

  3. Is the wedding nearby? If yes, consider splitting the difference. Bring the kids for dinner but take them home to a sitter so you can go back and enjoy the evening.
