THE QUESTION BOX

My Kid Got Car Sick in Their Car Seat—Is There Any Way to Salvage It?

It’s pretty much a rite of passage as a parent: At some point, your kiddo with throw up all over themselves in the car. And if they’re babies or toddlers, all over their car seat, too.

With all of a car seat’s nooks and crannies, from the outer plastic shell to the five-point harness, it can feel like an impossible task to clean up the mess. But it’s not actually as complicated as you might think. Here are some tips for maintaining the integrity of the seat while making your brush with barf a thing of the past:

  • A vacuum with a crevice attachment and an air duster (canned air, like you might use to clean your keyboard) can help to dislodge debris from tight spaces.

  • Consult your owner’s manual to be sure, but the cover can usually be machine-washed.

  • Do not saturate or soak the harness straps, and do not ever run them through the washing machine. Strap material is made from fabric that is approved for its weave, give, etc. and vigorous washing can damage it and make it less effective.

  • Sunshine is a natural odour and bacteria killer, so plan a car seat deep-clean for a day when you can leave everything outside to dry.
